As the US prepares for its 150th anniversary, one of the world’s greatest artists has found himself at odds with his country’s political leaders.
Claude Merton’s paintings show his passion for the US and his hatred for Nazi Germany.
Merton’s work depicts scenes from American history, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement and the Second World War.
Marts painting the US Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial have also drawn attention.
Merts painting of the Statue of Liberty has been viewed more than 2 million times.
The painting of President Lincoln in the Capitol was also seen by millions.
Mervis, the son of a former president, said he thought his father’s painting was “very beautiful.”
Mertis said he saw the artwork in a gallery and thought it was the best one he had seen in decades.
“When you think of art history, the only thing that you ever want to be involved in is the past,” he said.
“And this is the best painting of America I have ever seen.”
We don’t know if it was a mistake or not, but I think it was meant to be a message.
